Flower Essences
Flower Essences are Magical! As the plants’ highest expression—the flower is absorbed into water the plant spirit is also given into the water. Water is a perfect conductor and absorbs the charge of the flowers nature, which is what we see as its beauty and radiance. When diluted, this essence has an electro-magnetic charge, which reaches into the deeper bio-energetic pathways of the body. I have used many flower essence formulas throughout my adult life, also experiencing many synchronicities of time and place finding flowers along my path that were exactly the remedy I needed most. During these occasions I have been given a flower for my water and watch that flower to transform my water into a magical plant remedy. The most commonly used flower essences in my medicine cabinet are those that support emotional and spiritual wellbeing; for challenging times, and for stress. I have also had profound results with spiritual upliftment, expansion, and clarity using flower essences. The first flower essence I was given by my midwife: Walnut. She mentioned she kept it on hand for her clients for after the birth. Walnut is said to help with those big life changes and it did.

Flower essences work on an energetic, emotional level while herbal preparations work also in the physical realm. Flower essences are made from the flowers of plants and trees. Like homeopathy, flower essences are a form of energy medicine. Flower essences were discovered by Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician and homeopath. Dr. Bach discovered how to use flowers for emotional healing and created the first thirty eight flower essence remedies. Dr. Bach was unimpressed by the symptomatic approach of modern medicine and felt that medical doctors placed too much emphasis on the dis-ease symptoms and not on the person. He was also a proponent of healing through diet and detoxification of the gastrointestinal tract. As he worked with patients he began to notice their emotional state influenced their ability to heal. He observed that unresolved emotional conflicts created disharmony between the soul and the mind, eventually leading to physical illness. According to Bach, health was created by restoring harmony within the emotional and physical bodies, with health being “the true realization of what we are; we are perfect; we are children of God.” In his quest to create a more natural and effective system of healing he found that homeopathic preparations of flowers could guide a person to greater emotional balance.

Plants Are Loving

Plants are Loving:
As Matthew Wood says in his book Seven Herbs: Plants as Teachers; every healing plant is the embodiment of a conflict in the environment that the plant has successfully overcome. By capturing the vibration of plant’s personality through the flower you can take that vibration into your own being and learn how to experience that same emotional energy. The plant teaches us on a vibrational level how to cope with life in a happy, peaceful, and loving manner.
Choosing the One:
Let the flower call to you. You will see it in nature and be magnetized to it, or if you purchase it your eyes will be drawn to that particular bottle. There is a flower essence remedy for a wide range of emotional states. Essences may be chosen this way, matching the essence to your current emotional state. They may also be chosen based in intuition. Most of the time I am drawn to a flower and use it for an essence I end up researching the “whys” of that particular flower and it always ends up a perfect match. The beauty of flower essences is no harm may come from taking any of the essences, so even if you are drawn to one and not sure why, it can’t hurt to try it. In fact it may be exactly the medicine you need but you need it on such a deep level you aren’t able to recognize it consciously.

DIY Flower Essence
How to Make:
Flower essences are made by soaking flowers in pure spring water, usually in the sunlight, and then preserving the strained water with brandy.
As a testament to the purely energetic effects of flower essences, many herbalists are creating flower essences by simply placing spring water close to the flower and allowing the essence to flow into the water from there. This is a testament to the healing power of simply being in nature.
Flower essences are made by soaking flowers in pure spring water, usually in the sunlight, and then preserving the strained water with brandy.
- Obtain flowers from the plant at the peak of blooming. Place them in a glass bowl filled with clean spring water. Allow them to soak in the sunlight for 3-5 hours. If the plant blooms at night, gather the flowers at the height of their blooming and soak them (preferably under a full moon) for the same 3-5 hours.
- Strain the flowers and pour the water into glass container. Preserve the flower water with an equal amount of brandy. This produces the flower essence mother tincture.
- This mother tincture is now diluted: prepare a second bottle filled with a mixture of water and brandy. This bottle needs to be only about 20-25% brandy. To this bottle, add 5-6 drops of the mother tincture for each ounce of water in the new bottle. Put the lid on the bottle and shake it vigorously up and down against the palm of your hand about 10 times. This creates the stock bottle.
- Dilute the stock tincture in the identical manner as described in step three to create a dosage bottle. The dosage bottle is ready to go! You can use as a single remedy or add 1-5 additional flower essences to the bottle. (Horne, 2016)

In 1930 Bach wrote Heal Thyself, a spiritual underpinning on health and illness. In 1938 he released the culmination of his work, The Twelve Healers, a simple book presenting all 38 remedies. Since Bach's death his legacy has been carried out by his trusted friends and colleagues, and is alive today through the Bach Flower Centre. Since his discoveries and development of the 38 remedies many others have followed his guidance and inspiration by exploring additional flower remedies. There are currently hundreds of different flower essences being produced. In fact, the only limit to the amount of flower essences that are possible is the amount of different flowers on the planet.
