Go Raw: A Living Tapestry of Nutrition, Light, and Vitality

There comes a moment in healing when the body stops surviving and starts reaching. When fog clears not from force, but from nourishment. This is the call of raw food—a return to the rhythm we were designed for.
To go raw is a return. A resonance. A remembering. Raw food is the body’s native language: water-rich, mineral-charged, sun-fed, enzyme-alive. It speaks directly to our cells, not in fragments, but in full sentences.
"In general, mankind, since the improvement in cookery, eats twice as much as nature requires.
(Benjamin Franklin)
The longer I have been on the raw food path, the more I tend to come full circle and return to where my original ideas and inspiration of wanting to eat raw food come from - and that’s natural hygiene and its principles.
(Kytka Hilmar-Jezek, Raw Food for Children)
Most raw fooders don't embrace fruit, instead they embarrass it. by stripping the avocado down to fats and proteins, they paint a portrait that is most uncomely, unflattering and entirely dishonest. By reducing a banana to 100 calories, in the most ugliest of fashions, they attempt to quantify the unquantifiable. By converting a fruit salad to a plate of LFHCs, they degrade and insult the innocence and beauty of fruit.
(Mango Wodzak, The Eden Fruitarian Guidebook)

Raw Food for Detox Raw Food for Life

While it's important to avoid putting yourself in a "food paradigm," it can certainly be helpful to establish a sort of "container" for your diet, whether for the short or long-term. From my perspective a raw vegan diet is at the basis of any purification program, and after the transition from a SAD to Happy diet, is the most natural step to take. I recommend setting a timeframe of 30 days (or so) and sticking with it. For some this protocol will cause detox reactions, others will sail through, and still others will see it as the most natural way of eating. Raw food cleanses seem to offer the highest and well-rounded form of detox: Eat all you want, follow basic food combining principles, play with concepts such as intermittent fasting, juice fasting, and mono meals, if you feel so inspired, but basically just stick to a Raw Vegan Diet. Fruits and Vegetables exclusively, with a handful of nuts and seeds if you feel so called.
This of course is not really a fast since you are still eating food. But to most people who eat heavy, cooked foods, this is definitely considered a fast. Remember: no other animal cooks its food before eating it. Take this fast a day at a time, and try to eat all raw food that day. Try this fast for 5, 10, 30 or 60 days in succession, eating only all raw foods, the longer the better. This type of fast would include fresh raw fruits, fruit juices, vegetables and vegetable juices. No “protein” type foods like nuts or seeds.

The Original Design

The fruit of the tree shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
(Genesis 1:29)
Long before the age of stoves and labels, food grew, ripened, and fell into our hands. Every ancient healing tradition—Egyptian, Ayurvedic, Taoist—holds memory of this garden: a way of living and eating rooted in sunlight, simplicity, and seasonal flow.
Cooked food came with survival. Raw food arose from abundance. It asks nothing of the body it doesn’t already know how to do. No translation. No defense. Just light, absorbed and received.

The Raw Food Lifestyle: Scientifically-Supported Health Benefits

The raw food lifestyle is more than a dietary choice – it’s often described as a return to nature and vitality. At its core, a raw food diet involves eating foods in their natural, unheated state to preserve nutrients and life energy. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains are staples, sometimes complemented by fermented foods and cold-pressed oils (1, 2). Advocates believe this approach unlocks health benefits ranging from improved digestion and weight loss to reduced inflammation and stronger immunity. Beyond nutrition, the raw food movement carries a rich history and a philosophy that views “living foods” as conduits of vital force and higher consciousness. In this article, we delve into the scientific evidence for raw food’s health impacts, explore the nutritional science of raw vs. cooked foods (including a comparison table), trace the pioneers who blazed the trail, and examine the spiritual and philosophical dimensions that give the raw lifestyle its unique glow.

Digestive Health and Enzymes

Raw foods are often lauded for their positive effects on digestion and gut health. They are naturally rich in dietary fiber and water, which help maintain regularity and nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Many raw fruits and vegetables contain digestive enzymes (e.g., papaya’s papain and pineapple’s bromelain) that proponents say aid in breaking down food. Advocates claim that consuming foods without heating preserves the enzymes, allowing the body to use less of its enzyme reserves for digestion (3, 4). Cooking can deactivate food enzymes – most enzymes begin to denature at temperatures above approximately 118°F (48°C). However, the scientific consensus holds that our bodies produce ample digestive enzymes and that plant enzymes from raw foods are mostly broken down in the stomach (3, 4). Raw diets often include fermented foods (like sauerkraut, kimchi, or Rejuvelac) which introduce probiotics and additional enzymes that may enhance digestion and gut microbiome health. Many report reduced bloating and improved digestion on a high-raw diet, likely due to the high fiber content and absence of processed irritants. Dr. Norman W. Walker famously asserted that “80% of all disease begins in the colon,” linking digestive cleanliness to overall well-being (5).

Weight Management and Metabolic Health

One of the most documented benefits of a raw food diet is weight loss and improved weight management. Research consistently shows that plant-based diets are associated with lower body weight and reduced obesity risk (6). Raw diets, in particular, tend to be low in energy density and high in fiber, leading to a natural reduction in calorie intake. In a large study of 513 people following long-term raw diets, men lost an average of ~9.9 kg and women ~12 kg over about 3.7 years (7). Many participants had body-mass indices in the lean or even underweight range, reflecting the diet's potent weight loss effects. Another review of 24 studies found that higher consumption of raw vegetables was strongly linked to reduced obesity and better metabolic health outcomes (6). Researchers confirmed causality through genetic analysis (Mendelian randomization), indicating the direct influence of raw vegetable intake on improved weight outcomes (6). Raw whole foods are filling but not calorie-dense, and some calories in fibrous raw foods are not fully absorbed, which contributes to weight loss (2). By eliminating refined sugars, oils, and processed snacks, a raw food regimen naturally curbs dietary excesses. Raw vegan diets have also demonstrated improvements in markers like insulin sensitivity and blood pressure (6, 8).

Inflammation & Cardiovascular Health

A high-raw diet can significantly reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular health. Raw fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals that combat oxidative stress and inflammation. A 2024 analysis noted that raw vegetables contain compounds such as phytosterols and flavonoids that reduce cholesterol and inflammation (6). Diets rich in raw plant foods correlate with dramatically lower inflammatory biomarkers, including CRP (55% lower) and IL-6 (25% lower), compared to minimal raw food intake (9). Another study of strict raw foodists reported significantly lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, beneficial for cardiovascular health (10). Avoiding cooking-induced toxins like advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs) further contributes to reduced inflammation and cardiovascular risk (4).
Immune Function and Disease Resistance

Immune Function and Disease Resistance

Plant-based diets, particularly raw diets, are associated with enhanced immune function. Raw foods maximize intake of immune-supporting micronutrients such as vitamins C, A, zinc, and selenium (1, 6). Fermented raw foods provide probiotics that enhance gut immunity. Some evidence suggests vegan diets modulate immune responses toward antiviral and anti-inflammatory states (11, 12). Studies involving participants in raw vegan institutes report reductions in inflammatory immune markers and improved quality of life, suggesting immune benefits (8, 13). Antioxidants abundant in raw foods (e.g., vitamins E, C, polyphenols) protect immune cells from oxidative damage, enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections and cancer cells (6).

Dr. Morse on Eating Raw

Energy is also classified as being kinetic or potential. Kinetic energy is energy at work. Potential energy is stored energy—it has potential for use. The chemical energy in food is potential to a certain degree, until released via enzyme and other chemical activators. Then this potential energy becomes kinetic, or more active, electrifying and creating activity in its wake. A great example of the difference between potential and kinetic energy is found in comparing cooked foods with raw foods. The electromagnetic energy (combined molecular energy) of cooked foods is dramatically lower than that of raw foods. The reason is that when heat is applied to a compound its molecular structure changes somewhat, as electrons are altered. Think about what happens to water when you heat it—its form changes from liquid to vapor. With heat, unsaturated fats become saturated (as water-soluble constituents are destroyed, leaving only some of the elements that comprise them), and many dangerous and carcinogenic compounds are created when foods are cooked. Heat also destroys the enzymes in food, which are absolutely necessary as catalysts. The bottom line is that the more energy your cells have, the healthier your body is.

The chemistry of food is somewhat complex when you realize that many compounds work synergistically, while many biotransmute (change) into other constituents and simpler compounds. Most people focus mainly on the vitamin and mineral content of a food, ignoring this long list of other properties and elements that are just as vital to the health of the body.
Plant amino acids are more energetic and easy for your body to break down and use, which is why raw foodists who eat a balanced variety of fruits, vegetables and nuts are never deficient in amino acids necessary forhealth. Meat, on the other hand, requires a more radical and energy-robbing digestive process to obtain the amino acids that comprise it. The other important factor here is that meat protein leaves an acid reaction in the body creating more acidosis, whereas vegetables leave an alkaline reaction in your body curing acidosis. Your body requires live foods, full of phytochemicals, to make it alive.

Medical Medium Raw Food Cleanse

The full cleanse: focuses on raw fruits and vegetables; is low in fat; and eliminates processed food, dairy and animal products. To understand why these foods are eliminated, you can read Liver Rescue. Don’t be afraid of eating raw foods, by the way. They’re actually often easier to digest than cooked foods because the raw version still contains all the living enzymes that naturally help with digestion. Some people believe they can’t digest raw foods, but what is actually happening is that they feel these fibrous foods sweeping along sensitive nerves in their gut and feel discomfort. But this does not mean they are not being digested. If someone sees pieces of raw fruits or vegetables in their bowel movement, it means they have weak digestion and low bile and hydrochloric acid, but this will be the case no matter what they eat.

It’s also important not to be afraid of eating fruit, either. Fruit is the most healing, cleansing, essential food on the planet. It’s also the easiest to digest. It’s an incredibly important food for your health. If you have a fear of fruit, please read Medical Medium or listen to my radio show on Fruit Fear so you’ll understand what a gift fruit really is.

As a recap, the 28-Day Cleanse is incredibly powerful. It will help you clean and clear your liver from the buildup of viruses, bacteria, toxic heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and everyday chemicals like perfume and conventional household cleaning products. It will break down and eliminate leftovers, such as rancid fats that have been sitting in the lining of your digestive tract. It will restore your adrenals. It will rebuild and rebalance your hydrochloric acid levels so you can digest foods efficiently. And it will allow you to absorb the nutrients that all the systems in your body (especially your central nervous system) need in order to function well.
This cleanse was created to help you. It has a great history of turning lives around. Take this cleanse, like everything, one day at a time. If you can only do it for one week, do it for one week. Hang in there. Over time, you may end up doing two weeks, or even more. Just know that I’m here for you and I’m proud of you for doing something good for yourself and your loved ones.
